Tool Electronic Product Environmental Assessment, initially funded by the Agency for Environmental Protection and managed by the Green Electronics Council, helps consumers find green-friendly notebooks, laptops and desktop computers. Its website, epeat.net, claims about 40 manufacturers and more than 2,700 registered products.
"If it was 10 or 15, it would be really difficult to find more sustainable options in this category," said O'Brien, director of communications for EPEAT.
The EPA is constantly tightening the qualifications for "green" electronics. Because of well known technology companies are listening and want in, it became relatively easy to equip the college dorm room with products like - without breaking the bank, said O'Brien.
