    Sound Advice: Cable will solve FireWire connection problem

    Q. I am trying to connect my FireWire video converter for my Macbook Pro. Both say they have FireWire, but my Mac has a square and the link connection port my converter looks like a long rectangle with a V at the end. Are they compatible or am I out of luck?

    A. They are compatible. There are two kinds of FireWire, FireWire 400 (just called FireWire) and FireWire 800. FireWire is a 4-pin connection, which looks like a tiny square with a groove in it, and a 6-pin connection, which looks like a rectangular with V-shape on one side and the square of the other.They are all compatible and 4-pin to 4 pin, 4-pin to 6-pin and 6 pin to 6 pin cables are all. FireWire 800 has a large square connection and is backward compatible with FireWire.

    Your converter has a 6-pin FireWire connection and your MacBook Pro has a FireWire 800 connection. Get one FireWire 800 6-pin FireWire cable, connect and be ready to go. The cables can be found online for under $ 10.
