In the cabin there’s a simplicity that speaks of BMW. It’s mainly black plastic, yet what could be dull is lifted with style, subtle chromium and manufacturing precision. Like the vernier scales on the speedometer, there for no other reason than to give technical depth to the business of speed measurement. The leather steering wheel is lovely, although the chunky column stalks verge on clumsy. Likewise there’s a USB charging slot in the centre arm rest, but the lid crushes whatever you’ve plugged into it. The seats, however, are comfy and present the driver in an almost perfect position. Rear accommodation is large enough for three abreast, there’s loads of storage room and the boot is huge.
It’s under the bonnet that the main change has been wrought, however. The Insignia has always offered high levels of equipment, but the engine choice has been pedestrian. Simple four-pot mills might be more economical, but aren’t much of a comparison with the six- and even eight-cylinder units of premium rivals. Vauxhall’s answer is the BiTurbo diesel, mustering 192bhp and 295lb ft of torque, which is enough to give this 1.64-ton car a top speed of 143mph, 0-62mph acceleration in 8.2sec, Combined fuel economy of 57.6mpg and Band D emissions of 129g/km. The best we saw in over 500 miles of mixed driving was 44.5mpg, which reduced to 37mpg after a hard run across the Welsh mountains.
