insignia portable USB laptop speakers- no sound! PLEASE HELP!?

i just bought them. I plugged them into my mac with 10.5.6. the lighting on the side lights up. I can manipulate the volume on the speaker, but the sound is still coming from my laptop speakers, not the portable speakers. help?
