Hip these days includes pencils bearing images of Spider-Man, Barbie or Hello Kitty. Really hip crowd in pre-K is the iPod Touch, used to learn to write letters and spell words. Not that Carnes gives those away.

"Children today are so technologically driven," said Carnes, director of Herrera Elementary School in Houston.

"I think we need to bring their world into the classroom," he added. "The pencil and paper is my world."

Pencils have not gone the way of the typewriter or fax - for the moment. As the new school year begins, parents still need to source on pencils and other school supplies.
