Bob Dylan, singer-songwriter and the figurehead of social unrest, warned us, “The Times They Are A Changin!” Little did I know 40 years ago that I would have a daughter graduating in 2012, and I would be writing this story and be able to remember so much and be witness to so many changes.
In 1972, MHS only had three grades: 10th, 1lth and 12th. The student body consisted of around 350. The senior class graduated 113. Today the student population is 1,448, with 360 that will graduate on May 12, in Knoxville at the Thompson Boling Arena, the only place large enough to accommodate the crowd.
Thinking back to the early 1970s, lifestyles and attitudes were changing. It was turbulent times in America, cultural and political views were ready for a renewed sense of spirit. In order to gain a better understanding of what was unfolding before our very eyes, some noted historical facts need to be revealed. We had witnessed the longest war ever in U.S. history (Vietnam 1961-1975), lived through the struggles of the civil rights issues of the 1960s, Richard Nixon was the president, the 26th amendment lowered the voting age to 18, Alabama Gov. George Wallace was shot, 13,000 anti-war demonstrators were arrested in Washington, D.C., Charles Manson was found guilty, the Supreme court ruled the death penalty was unconstitutional, gas was 36 cents a gallon (during the gas wars it went as low as 15 cents a gallon), life expectancy was 71.2 years, federal debt was $435.9 billion, median household income was $9,769. The cost of a first-class postage stamp was 8 cents, unemployment rates varied from 3.6 percent to 5.9 percent, Atari introduced “Pong,” the first video game, the CD was developed by RCA, the National Institute of Mental Health and the Surgeon General issued a report that claimed exposure to violence on TV fosters aggression in children (parents did not understand the extent of this). In the movies, “The Godfather” was considered an artistic masterpiece and made us aware of the horrors of The Mafia. “Deliverance” (starring Jon Voight, better known today as Angelina Jolie’s father), showed us some questionable myths about rednecks in the South.
The truth is the masses are choosing Google right now. Of course, when those numbers start coming up the counter becomes iOS outselling Android by including the iPod/iPad. Classic chest thumping based on comparing Oranges to Potatoes.
