We are not exactly big fans of netbooks to expert advice. They do not have the raw power to handle much more than a simple Word document or browser tab without grinding to a halt. Fortunately, manufacturers are starting to phase them out in favor of a slightly larger, more powerful models that are still small and light enough to carry with you. Sony refreshed 11.6in Y series is among the first we've seen, and if it is an indication of what is to come, things are improving.

Unlike netbooks, which are typically powered by Intel Atom low power series Y has an AMD chip Fusion. This is an APU (Accelerated Processing Unit) that combines a CPU and GPU in one chip, as most of the Intel Core. The dual-core AMD E-350 APU operating at 1.6 GHz and is paired with a generous 4GB of RAM, which helps with multitasking. Strangely, Sony has decided to install the 32 bit version of Windows 7, so it will not be able to access the full amount of memory, but we were happy to see rather than the Home Premium edition Starter based netbooks that plagues.
